Laminated vs Solid Logs: What Actually Changes

Both wall systems produce a log home, and homeowners choose each for good reasons. The decision is easier once you understand what the engineering difference actually changes day to day, rather than treating it as a debate about authenticity.
Settling
A solid log wall is built from whole logs that continue to release moisture after assembly. As they do, the wall loses height, which is why traditional log homes are detailed with settling allowances above windows and doors and often use adjustable jacks. Laminated logs are built up from kiln-dried lamellae bonded together, which stabilizes the member and largely removes that movement.
Maintenance over time
Both systems need exterior finish maintenance — logs are wood, and wood exposed to sun and rain needs care regardless of how the wall is built. Where they differ is in the settling-related work: re-chinking, jack adjustment and re-trimming openings are ongoing items on a solid log home and largely absent on a laminated one.

Which one is right
If the appearance and character of individual whole logs is the point of the house for you, solid logs deliver something engineered walls do not attempt to imitate. If you want the log aesthetic with a predictable wall and a shorter maintenance list, laminated logs are the more practical system. Neither answer is wrong; they are different priorities.
