Wood vs Steel Framing for Homes

Wood framing dominates residential construction in North America, and steel has a real place in it. The right answer for a given house depends on climate, local labor, the design and the priorities of the owner more than on any general claim that one material is better.
Cost and labor
Wood is generally cheaper to buy and far easier to find crews for, which matters more than the material price on a residential job. Steel framing requires crews experienced with it; where those crews are scarce, the labor premium can exceed any material advantage.
Dimensional stability and moisture
Steel does not shrink, warp, twist or feed termites, and it does not rot. Wood moves with moisture, which is why lumber is dried and why framing details allow for it. In very humid or termite-heavy regions this is a genuine argument for steel.
Thermal performance
Steel conducts heat far more readily than wood, so a steel-framed wall requires continuous exterior insulation to avoid thermal bridging through every stud. This is solvable and routine, but it is a real design requirement, not an optional upgrade.

How to decide
Ask local builders what they frame with and why. In most markets the honest answer is wood, because that is where the skilled labor is. Where steel is common — coastal humidity, high termite pressure, certain commercial-influenced designs — builders will tell you that too.
